POEMS OF ENDURANCE

suzanne boucher

GRINDING

And I was grinding too
Shrunken down
Turned within
Curling up
Had to tell the story
Part of it
And I shrank
Curled
And ground
My mind
My head
Against the stone
That is always there
Waiting
For me to return
Every time I tell
The story

CHILD WITH A CHILD

The beauty of her
Pale defenseless
But not ruined
Though many tried
To destroy her innocence

She said
He beat me because
He knew I wouldn't tell
He would kick me
Me and the dog

Others attacked and
Did their best to
Corrupt this child
Now a child with a child
Who wants to save herself
For the sake of her baby

Her beauty remains
No one was able
To destroy it

She is trying now
Asking for help
Trying to live
For her child
If not for herself
